A softphone is software that enables VoIP calls to be made without using an actual handset. The softphone is viewed on the computer screen and is often presented like a traditional handset.

The advantage of a softphone is that there is no cost element for handset hardware. You can simply use the microphone and speaker in your PC. Alternatively you can use a headset for added privacy. Plus there is less to carry around when travelling as you only need your laptop, not a bulky handset.
